Coach of the Year

Julie Targett, affectionately known as Jules, is recognized for her extensive contributions to Pony Club Tasmania over several decades. As one of the Northern Zone Committee’s coaching coordinators, she plays a pivotal role in proficiency assessment days and has been instrumental in helping clubs navigate the changes in the syllabus.

A Level 1 coach with a show jumping extension and a Coach Mentor, Jules consistently stays abreast of new coaching methods across multiple disciplines, including dressage, show jumping, cross country, and theory. Her commitment to professional development is evident in her regular attendance at coaching accreditation courses, ensuring she delivers the highest quality instruction.

For over 20 years, Jules has been the main coach at the Devonport District Pony Club (DDPC), where she actively coaches at rallies, provides private lessons, and leads riders at State Trials and State Dressage and Show Jumping Championships. Her dedication to the sport extends beyond her own club, as she often volunteers to help riders from other clubs during competitions, exemplifying her commitment to fostering a supportive community.

Jules goes above and beyond for every rider, meticulously organizing warm-ups and training sessions, while providing emotional support as a confidant and friend. Her ability to keep riders calm and focused, while also encouraging them to enjoy the journey, creates a positive atmosphere, whether they are facing challenges or celebrating victories. She has built lasting relationships with many members, guiding them through their Pony Club journeys, and her friendship remains cherished long after they age out.

At State events, Jules enhances team bonding by participating fully, making events enjoyable and memorable. She selflessly assists those in need, including transporting members and their horses when transportation issues arise. Her mentorship extends beyond coaching; she makes each member feel valued and special.

Jules’ commitment to her club is not limited to coaching; she readily helps with non-coaching tasks at events, demonstrating her dedication to the community, whether it’s emptying rubbish bins or cleaning toilets. Additionally, as a main show jumping course builder for northern Tasmania, she imparts her knowledge on course design to riders, further enriching their learning experience.

Julie Targett is not just a coach; she is an integral part of the DDPC family. Her tireless dedication, unwavering support, and deep love for the Pony Club community make her an extraordinary coach.
