What does leadership look like at Pony Club?
For the current group of PCA Leadership Certificate candidates, it looks like welcoming a nervous new rider, supporting a teammate at a competition, putting a hand up to volunteer, listening to different viewpoints and helping turn good ideas into action.
At a recent online Leadership Certificate workshop, candidates explored the role young leaders can play in shaping positive, welcoming and sustainable Pony Club communities.
Their discussion showed that leadership is not about having a title or being the loudest voice in the room. It is about how you show up for others: being approachable, reliable and inclusive; leading by example; taking initiative; and helping people feel confident to get involved.
The candidates identified the powerful influence that Pony Club leaders can have at every level. Strong leadership helps clubs run, grow and connect. It supports horse welfare, creates a positive culture, encourages volunteering and helps younger members see what is possible.
Just as importantly, they recognised that leadership can come from anyone.
Across the group, candidates are already putting those ideas into practice through projects that respond to real needs in their own Pony Club communities. These include promoting a small club to attract new members, running a games day, developing an off-the-track horse masterclass and progressing through coaching qualifications.
The group also contributed ideas on how Pony Club can continue to develop and progress nationally, identifying stronger connections between clubs and states as key to building community, sharing ideas and creating greater consistency across Pony Club.
The workshop also explored practical challenges faced by clubs, including welcoming new members, managing conflict constructively and supporting volunteers without placing too much pressure on the same small group of people. Ideas included buddy systems for new riders, clearer and kinder communication, recognising volunteers’ efforts and creating opportunities for members to learn roles gradually alongside more experienced people.
These are the skills that make a difference not only at Pony Club, but at school, work and in the wider community.
The PCA Leadership Certificate gives members aged 14 to 18 the opportunity to develop and demonstrate leadership skills in horse sports and beyond. Completed over nine to 12 months at a pace that suits each candidate, the program combines skill development, community involvement, leadership in action and personal reflection.
Candidates are supported by mentors, a resource library and group learning sessions, while being encouraged to choose meaningful ways to demonstrate their skills through their own projects and experiences.
The outcome is more than a certificate. It is greater confidence, stronger communication and teamwork skills, practical experience, and a deeper understanding of how each member can contribute to a positive future for Pony Club.
