Reasonable Adjustments for Inclusion
Pony Club is committed to ensuring all riders have the opportunity to participate safely and fairly. In some circumstances, riders may require a reasonable adjustment to standard rules or activities in order to participate.
We know clubs, coaches, officials and volunteers always work hard to include riders and find practical ways to help every member participate and succeed. Every weekend across Australia, clubs make thoughtful decisions that enable riders with different abilities, medical conditions and individual needs to enjoy all that Pony Club has to offer.
What some members may not know is that Pony Club Australia has a Reasonable Adjustment process to support this work. While the process has been available for some time, it might be that not everyone is aware of it or when it can be used.
A Reasonable Adjustment helps remove barriers for riders who may have:
- A disability
- A medical condition
- A learning or cognitive challenge
- Other circumstances that affect participation under standard rules
Adjustments ensure riders can take part while maintaining safety and fairness for everyone.
What is a Reasonable Adjustment?
A reasonable adjustment is a modification to how an activity is conducted, rather than changing the core objective of the activity.
Examples may include:
- Calling a dressage test
- Additional time to complete a task or activity
- A scribe for written tests
- Modified equipment
- Alternative methods of communication or instruction
- Adjustments to how a skill is demonstrated or assessed
- Each request is considered individually based on individual needs.
How to Apply
Riders or parents/carers can apply through the Pony Club Australia application form:
Applications should include:
- Details of the requested adjustment
- Supporting documentation (where appropriate)
- Information on how the adjustment supports participation
Applications are reviewed to ensure the adjustment is:
- Reasonable
- Safe
- Fair within Pony Club activities
When Should You Apply?
It is recommended applications are submitted well before competitions, rallies or championships to allow time for review.
