Vaulting

Vaulting combines gymnastics and dance performed on horseback, tracing its origins back to ancient Roman times.

In competitive vaulting, participants—known as vaulters—compete individually, in pairs (pas-de-deux), or as teams. The sport focuses on enhancing a vaulter’s seat, balance, rhythm, coordination, and confidence while performing acrobatic movements atop a moving horse.

Competitions

Competitions are conducted in both walk and canter gaits, with the horse controlled by a lunger stationed in the center of a minimum 15-meter diameter circle.

The competition arena must have a soft and springy footing, ensuring safety and comfort for both horses and vaulters. Typically held indoors to minimize distractions, vaulting arenas must meet specific size requirements, usually at least 18 meters in diameter.

What Opportunities Do I Have?

Vaulting offers Pony Club® members a unique opportunity to blend athleticism with horsemanship skills. Participants can start at beginner levels, practicing vaulting exercises at a walk, before progressing to canter routines as they gain experience. Horses chosen for vaulting are selected primarily for their temperament and ability to maintain a steady pace while accommodating vaulters performing various acrobatic maneuvers.

Vaulting horses undergo extensive training, often receiving six to twelve months of preparation in both dressage and vaulting techniques before competing. While larger horses, ideally 16 hands high (hh) or taller, are preferred for competitive vaulting due to their stability and strength, clubs can accommodate smaller horses for younger or smaller members.

To begin vaulting, interested individuals are encouraged to contact local vaulting clubs equipped with the necessary training facilities, equipment, and experienced instructors. These clubs provide a supportive environment for learning and advancing in the sport, fostering skills in gymnastics, dance, and equestrianism within the vibrant community of vaulting enthusiasts.
