RIDDEN Activities
Side Saddle
Side saddle riding is a traditional equestrian discipline where riders sit with both legs on one side of the horse’s body.
Contrary to popular belief, side saddle riding is not exclusively for women and has historical roots that include both men and women riders. The saddle used in side saddle riding is specially designed with a unique structure that allows the rider to sit securely and comfortably while maintaining an upright posture.

Background
Historically, side saddle riding evolved from its early forms where riders faced sideways in a chair-like saddle arrangement.
Over time, saddle designs progressed to include an upright pommel, known as the fixed head or upper crutch, which helped riders secure their position while riding at speeds faster than a walk. By the 1500s, side saddles had developed further with the addition of a lower pommel, known as the leaping head, and a flat seat, resembling modern designs used today.
What Opportunities Do I Have?
Riding side saddle requires a specific type of saddle designed exclusively for the discipline. These saddles cannot be interchanged with regular saddles and are available in various forms including second-hand, custom-made, or rented. It’s crucial to ensure the saddle fits both the rider’s thigh measurements and the horse’s back profile to prevent discomfort and ensure safety.
For those interested in exploring side saddle riding, seeking guidance from a specialist side saddle instructor is highly recommended. These instructors provide valuable lessons to help riders and horses adapt to this unique style of riding safely and comfortably. Additionally, joining side saddle riding clubs or associations offers opportunities to participate in clinics, demonstrations, and even competitions, fostering a supportive community dedicated to preserving and advancing this traditional equestrian art.
