Pole Work

Pole work is a versatile and engaging activity for both horses and riders. It involves using ground poles in various patterns and combinations to create exercises that enhance a horse’s and rider’s skills.

This activity is not only fun but also highly beneficial for improving several key aspects of riding and training.

Benefits of Pole Work

  • Improves Rider Balance and Control: Navigating poles helps riders develop better balance, accuracy, security, and control over their horse.
  • Enhances Horse Adaptability: It teaches horses to become more adaptable and to think for themselves, responding to different obstacles and patterns.
  • Introduces Jumping: Coaches often use pole work to introduce jumping to riders and horses in a controlled and gradual manner.
  • Variety and Stimulation: The equipment can be arranged in numerous patterns, providing a fresh and stimulating lesson each time. This keeps both horse and rider engaged and challenged.
  • Builds Trust and Confidence: Working over poles builds trust between horse and rider, as they learn to navigate the obstacles together.

Extreme Pole Work

An example of advanced pole work is the six-bar event.

In this event, riders navigate six fences of ascending height, set two strides apart. This activity demonstrates the importance of training and trust, as both horse and rider must smoothly tackle the increasingly challenging obstacles. Whether the fences are 60cm or 1.6m high, the flow and rhythm of a good day can make the course seem effortless.
