Endurance

Endurance riding is a long-distance equestrian sport where riders and their horses must demonstrate stamina, fitness, and excellent horsemanship.

Competitions cover substantial distances, with riders navigating predetermined routes and completing the course within a set time. Horse care is paramount in endurance riding, with regular vet checks before, during, and after the ride to ensure the horse’s well-being.

What Opportunities Do I Have?

Pony Club® members can participate in both endurance rides and shorter navigation rides. Navigation rides are team events where two or three riders follow a fixed route over several kilometres, travelling on quiet dirt roads, bush tracks, or private property.

Riders must travel at a walk and trot, guided by clues, and answer questions on a score sheet. They must finish within a set time, making it a test of both navigation and horsemanship.

For those interested in longer distances, endurance riding offers individual competition opportunities. Riders need to be very fit, and careful planning is essential to complete the ride within the allotted time. The sport emphasises horse care, with checkpoints and stewards along the route to monitor progress and health. These rides also often include vet checks to ensure the horse’s fitness before, during, and after the event.
