In the heart of Pony Club, we see young people grow not only as riders but also as leaders, friends, and changemakers.
One such inspiring member is Zara from Coffs Harbour Pony Club (Zone 9), whose compassion and initiative have given rise to a meaningful project that honours the memory of a fellow rider.
Honouring a Friend
In December 2024, the Pony Club community of northern New South Wales was deeply affected by the tragic loss of 15-year-old Lacey Pitkin, a beloved member of Dorrigo Pony Club, who sadly took her own life.
Lacey was known for her kindness, encouragement, and community spirit. At the Annual Dorrigo Camp, she received the Community Spirit Award for her generosity towards younger riders and her ever-present smile. A devoted pony clubber, she spent countless hours with her ponies Sock and Flint, sharing adventures with friends and spreading joy in her close-knit community.
Her passing left her family, friends, and the Pony Club community heartbroken.
From Grief to Action

The name Lacey’s Legacy was first created by family friends shortly after her passing, to raise funds in support of the Pitkin family. Wanting to build on this tribute in a lasting way, Zara worked with Lacey’s family to develop a new initiative that reflects both her spirit and her love of Pony Club.
With creativity and determination, Zara designed custom black-and-white Roma saddle pads, embroidered in Lacey’s favourite colour and carrying her motto:
“See the best in everyone.”
These saddle pads are being distributed within Zone 9 now and are available for Pony Club Australia members nationally to purchase. $10 from every sale will be donated to i.am , a charity providing counselling, crisis support, and community programs for young people and families facing mental health challenges.
Lacey’s home club of Dorrigo has embraced the project wholeheartedly, purchasing a bundle of saddle pads to give away as prizes at their upcoming annual camp.
More Than Just a Saddle Pad
The Lacey’s Legacy saddle pads are more than a riding accessory. They are a symbol of strength, balance, and connection, carrying forward Lacey’s love of horses and her commitment to lifting others up.
Every purchase not only keeps Lacey’s spirit alive but also contributes to building a safer, stronger, and more hopeful future for young people and families.
As the team behind the initiative says:
“At Lacey’s Legacy, we are committed to promoting mental health awareness and supporting youth and families in need. Every purchase helps provide vital resources, while reminding us of Lacey’s message to ‘see the best in everyone’.”
