Hot Summer Ground, Happy Ponies and Riding from the Ground Up

Advice

After a really hot summer, many Pony Club grounds across Australia have become dry, compacted and very firm. While our horses are strong and adaptable, hard ground increases concussion forces travelling up through the hoof and leg.

When a hoof lands on baked or compacted ground, more impact is returned to the limb rather than absorbed by the surface. Research shows that harder surfaces increase limb loading and strain on tendons and joints (McGuigan & Wilson, 2003; Crevier-Denoix et al., 2013). Over time, repeated concussion without adequate recovery can contribute to soreness, shortened stride and joint stress.

This is not about avoiding riding. It is about riding smart.

Supporting Your Pony During Dry Conditions

Young riders can help protect their ponies by:

  • Adjusting intensity on very firm ground on rally days
  • Choosing softer areas of the grounds where possible
  • Allowing adequate recovery after hard-ground work
  • Keeping hooves balanced with regular farrier or trimmer visits
  • Watching for subtle signs like shortened stride or sensitivity

For many Pony Club families, Scootboots have been especially valuable during dry summers. Whether transitioning to barefoot, riding cross-country on firm tracks, or hacking over gravel, Scootboots provide sole protection and help moderate excessive concussion while still allowing natural hoof movement and expansion.

For ponies that are barefoot, transitioning from shoes, or sensitive on hard rally grounds, hoof boots can be a helpful management tool. They provide sole protection and help moderate concussion while still allowing natural hoof function. As always, correct fit and guidance from your hoof care professional is essential.

Comfort builds confidence.
Confidence builds better partnerships.

Young Riders Leading the Way

We have been thrilled by the number of entries coming in for the Scootboot Young Rider Award from Pony Club Australia members. The level of horsemanship, research and horse-first thinking shown by young riders this year has been outstanding.

It is clear that this generation understands that performance truly starts from the ground up.

Keep an eye out for our next competition, Share Your Freedom, launching soon. We cannot wait to see your stories, your ponies and your freedom in action.

Ride thoughtfully. Care deeply. And always think about what your pony feels underfoot.
