Thirteen-year-old Jack Cumming from Kyneton Pony Club in Pony Club Victoria’s Midland Zone is has travelled 1,685km to compete at the National Pony Racing Series Final at the Gold Coast Turf Club on Saturday.
Jack and his pony Poppy, a 12.2hh grey mare who is 12 years old, took out the Small Pony Category at the Victorian State Qualifier, proudly representing Frank and Christine Cook. Poppy is a big fan of trotting, jumping, and carrots—and she’s clearly enjoying the thrill of the track, too.
Jack only joined Pony Club three months ago, but he’s already loving the experience:
“I love meeting new friends with ponies.”
He credits both his mum and a friend’s mum as early influences on his Pony Club journey, and says his favourite part of Pony Racing is simple and joyful:
“Going fast and riding at different places.”
The National Pony Racing Series, a joint initiative between Pony Club Australia and Thoroughbred Industry Careers, gives young riders the chance to develop skills, experience racing in a professional setting, and explore future career pathways in the equine industry.
Getting to the Gold Coast has been a family effort for Jack.
“My Uncle Mark is driving us there. My Mum is organising the stopovers and accommodation, and my Dad is organising the feed and things to take.”
And what’s Jack most looking forward to?
“Riding in Queensland and seeing all the other riders that have travelled so far.”
We can’t wait to see Jack and Poppy take to the track—best of luck and enjoy every moment of your first National Final!
