Spending time with horses is one of the great joys of Pony Club—but staying safe around these powerful animals is essential. Whether you’re grooming, leading, or riding, following some simple safety rules helps keep everyone—horse and human—safe and confident.

One of the most important (and often overlooked) safety basics? Wearing the right footwear.

Why Footwear Matters
Horses are large, heavy animals, and even a gentle nudge or accidental step can do serious damage to your feet. That’s why Pony Club-approved riding boots are the gold standard. These boots are designed to:

  • Protect your feet from being stepped on
  • Provide ankle support during riding and groundwork
  • Prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup, reducing the risk of being dragged

Avoid wearing inappropriate footwear such as flip-flops, Crocs, or open-toed shoes—they offer no protection and can easily lead to injury. Shoes with thick, grippy soles may also get caught in the stirrups and should be avoided.

Other Key Safety Tips

  • Always have a helper with you, especially if you’re young or working with a new horse.
  • Stay alert and focused on your horse—avoid using phones, tablets, or headphones while around horses. These distractions can prevent you from noticing signs of danger.
  • Wear a properly fitted helmet whenever you’re handling or riding a horse. Your helmet should sit snugly on your head (not too loose or too tight) with the chin strap securely fastened. Long hair should be tied back neatly.
  • Dress for safety and comfort: Long sleeves and full-length pants like jodhpurs offer protection from sun and scrapes. Tuck in your shirt to avoid flapping fabric that may startle your horse.

Remember: Good safety habits aren’t just for lessons—they’re for every moment you’re with your horse. And it all starts from the ground up—with safe, appropriate footwear.
