From Tasmania’s Brighton and Southern Midlands Pony Club, 15-year-old Annie Wilson is getting ready to race at the National Pony Racing Series Final at the Gold Coast Turf Club on June 7.
Annie is competing in the Small Pony Category (ponies 12.2hh and under) with her 7-year-old gelding Pie—a fast, fun-loving pony who adores eventing, swimming, chasing cows, and going flat out on the track. The pair delivered a strong second-place finish in their Tasmanian State Qualifier, proudly representing Frank and Christine Cook.
Annie has been a member of Pony Club since she was three years old, and enthusiasm for the sport shines through when asked what she enjoys most about the National Pony Racing Series:
“I love going fast on the little ponies and the support everyone gives everyone.”
The Series is a joint initiative between Pony Club Australia and Thoroughbred Industry Careers, aimed at developing riding skills and building awareness of career pathways in the equine industry. Since launching in November, it has travelled across NSW, SA, WA, TAS, VIC and QLD, offering young riders the unforgettable experience of racing on professional tracks.
Annie says what she loves most about Pony Club is the supportive, family-friendly environment.
“I think the majority of the coaches in Pony Club have been a big influence, but my mum has been a big influence as well—she always wants me to do my best. My DC, Sarah Cotton, has also helped work with my confidence a lot and has taught me so much.”
To get to the final, Annie and Pie are travelling a massive 1,725km. Helping them along the way is Urban Horsewear, who are generously donating 10% of their profits to support Annie’s agistment and accommodation costs.
So what is she most excited for?
“Definitely being able to add another racecourse to my list of racecourses I’ve ridden on!”
Best of luck to Annie and Pie—we’ll be cheering you on from across Australia!
