Twelve-year-old Zara Green from Southport Pony and Hack Club in Queensland is preparing for a thrilling return to the track at the National Pony Racing Series Final tomorrow at the Gold Coast Turf Club—just 18km from home, but a huge moment in her riding journey.
Zara and her 13.3hh, 13-year-old mare Stella placed third in the Large Pony Final at the Queensland State Qualifier, proudly representing Pinecliff Racing. Stella’s favourite discipline is showjumping, but she’s discovered a new love: racing flat out.
Zara has been a member of Pony Club for 18 months and says what she enjoys most is:
“Getting to meet other kids that ‘talk horse’. I also love competing and taking Stella out to new places.”
She says the biggest influence on her Pony Club journey has been her peers:
“Probably the other kids. We all cheer each other on even when things aren’t going to plan or our ponies are naughty.”
The National Pony Racing Series, a joint initiative between Pony Club Australia and Thoroughbred Industry Careers, gives young riders like Zara the chance to build confidence, make friends, and experience the excitement of racing on a professional track.
For Zara, the experience is all about freedom and fun:
“It’s the first time I’ve been allowed to let Stella go as fast as she can. We both love it.”
And what is she most looking forward to at the final?
“Letting Stella run flat out again—she absolutely loved it the first time. I’m also excited to dress her up!”
Good luck Zara and Stella—we can’t wait to see you fly down the home straight!
