At just 10 years old, Olivia Hanby from Denman Pony Club in Zone 7 of Pony Club NSW is one of the youngest finalists in the National Pony Racing Series—but she’s already making a big impression!
Olivia and her pony Pippa, an 11.3hh, 9-year-old mare, won the Small Pony Category at the New South Wales State Qualifier, proudly representing Newcastle Racecourse. Pippa’s favourite discipline is eventing, but it’s clear she’s just as speedy on the racetrack!
Olivia has been in Pony Club for three years and says her favourite part is:
“I love how encouraging and fun it is—and you make lots of friends.”
When asked who has inspired her most in her riding journey, she says:
“The person I look up to most is Jess Somerfield. She’s amazing!”
The National Pony Racing Series—a joint initiative between Pony Club Australia and Thoroughbred Industry Careers—gives young riders like Olivia the chance to build their skills, explore equine industry careers, and experience the thrill of real-track racing in a fun and inclusive setting.
Olivia says the best part of pony racing is simple:
“The excitement!! Going down that track is such a cool experience and so much fun.”
To reach the final at the Gold Coast Turf Club on June 7, Olivia and Pippa will travel 802km, with the all-important help of her mum:
“She’s driving me there and feeding me on the way!”
And what is she most looking forward to?
“The experience of getting to the finals!”
We can’t wait to see Olivia and Pippa bring their energy and enthusiasm to the Gold Coast. Good luck, Olivia—you’ve already made NSW proud!
