Twelve-year-old Maci Brownrigg from Mersey Valley Pony Club in Tasmania is heading to the National Pony Racing Series Final at the Gold Coast Turf Club on June 7, travelling a massive 2,153km with her pony, Sparky, to get there!
Maci and Sparky placed second in the Large Pony Category at the Tasmanian State Qualifier, proudly representing Godolphin. Sparky is a 6-year-old, 13.1hh mare who’s quickly gaining confidence in her jumping and is starting to love cross country and showjumping—but her absolute favourite?
Pony racing, because it means she gets to run fast!
Maci has been part of Pony Club for seven years, and says her favourite thing about it is:
“I love spending time with my friends and horses at Pony Club. I enjoy being challenged and learning how to overcome different things with my horses.”
She credits her coach Tara as the biggest influence on her riding journey so far.
The National Pony Racing Series—a joint initiative between Pony Club Australia and Thoroughbred Industry Careers—gives young riders like Maci the opportunity to grow their riding skills, explore careers in the equine industry, and experience the excitement of real-track racing.
When asked what she enjoys most about Pony Racing, Maci said:
“I love being able to work through things with Sparky when she’s a bit anxious. I love spending this time with her—and going fast on the race track!”
Getting to the final has been a true team effort. Maci has received generous support from Tasracing, Pony Club Tasmania, and Pony Club Australia, helping her and Sparky chase their goals. She also thanks Equestrian Collective, who have provided riding and training clothing to support her journey.
So what is Maci most looking forward to at the Gold Coast?
“Meeting all the other riders with their ponies and making new friends. I can’t wait to see the Pony Racing team again—they are so supportive!”
