Horse Welfare

Pony Club Australia is sharing an opportunity for members and supporters to contribute to a University of Sydney research study exploring support for a national retirement safety net for thoroughbreds.

The study asks for views on how such a safety net could be funded and managed to protect thoroughbreds at risk of poor outcomes after their racing careers — including rehoming, retraining, or humane euthanasia when appropriate.

The research follows a recommendation from the Thoroughbred Welfare Initiative that long-term horse welfare must be a priority for the future of the racing and breeding industries.

Who Can Take Part?

You’re invited to participate if you:

  • Own or part-own a thoroughbred
  • Work with thoroughbreds
  • Have attended a thoroughbred race at least three times in the past 10 years
  • Have bet on a thoroughbred race at least three times in the past 10 years

Participants must be 18 years or older, as the survey includes questions about sensitive topics like horse welfare and gambling.

What’s Involved?

  • 15–20 minute online survey (up to 55 mostly multiple-choice questions)
  • Questions cover funding sources, how funds should be used, and public perceptions of thoroughbred racing
  • Optional open comment section and invitation to participate in a follow-up interview
  • You may request a copy of the final results

All responses are anonymous and any contact details will remain strictly confidential.
