Horsemanship, International Friendship and the Spirit of Pony Club
The Inter-Pacific Exchange (IPE) is one of Pony Club’s most cherished international traditions — a meeting place for young equestrians across continents, a celebration of horsemanship and sportsmanship, and a bridge between cultures connected by a shared love of horses.
Since the 1960s, the IPE has united teams from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and other invited nations, offering riders an unforgettable opportunity to represent their country, broaden their horizons, and forge lifelong friendships.
A New Era for an Enduring Tradition
Hosted by Pony Club Australia in 2025 and proudly presented by Racing Victoria Off The Track, the Exchange embraced a progressive, welfare-centred format that placed partnership and education at the heart of every experience.
Riders were paired with Off-the-Track Thoroughbreds (OTTs), developing their skills through a two-week program that focused on ethical training, teamwork and emotional intelligence. The initiative reflected Pony Club’s evolving commitment to evidence-based horsemanship and horse welfare, while honouring the camaraderie and competition that have long defined the IPE.
Each Exchange features a rich blend of:
- Equestrian training and team challenges such as the 6-Bar Jumping Challenge and Nations Cup Tournament
- Cultural exchange through shared experiences, travel and community visits
- Education and leadership development, guided by expert coaches and mentors
- Horse welfare and care, at the centre of all activities
Looking Ahead to 2026
The next Inter-Pacific Exchange is scheduled to be held in Canada in August 2026, continuing this proud tradition of international connection, education and friendship.
Further details about team selection and participation will be announced by Pony Club Australia in due course.
A Global Community Connected by Horses
The Inter-Pacific Exchange is far more than a competition — it’s an experience that shapes confident, compassionate riders and global citizens. Participants return home with:
- Enhanced understanding of horse behaviour, training and welfare
- Deep connections with riders from around the world
- A renewed appreciation for the versatility and generosity of the Thoroughbred
- Skills and friendships that last a lifetime
Selection and Eligibility
Riders are selected by their national Pony Club organisation through a competitive process based on age, ability, character and commitment to Pony Club values.
To be considered for the Australian team, riders typically:
- Are aged 17–26 years at the start of the Exchange year
- Hold a minimum B Certificate
- Demonstrate strong riding ability across multiple disciplines
- Exhibit teamwork, leadership and adaptability
Future participation and selection details will be shared by Pony Club Australia ahead of the 2026 event.
Continuing the Legacy
From its beginnings more than half a century ago to the innovative, welfare-focused model of today, the Inter-Pacific Exchange continues to evolve while staying true to its purpose — to connect, educate and inspire young horsepeople through the shared language of Pony Club.
