Our History

Founded in England in 1929, the Pony Club® began as junior groups affiliated with numerous Hunt Clubs, aimed at encouraging young people to learn to ride and enjoy horse sports. The concept quickly gained momentum, expanding to 59 branches within the first year. The first overseas club was established in Gibraltar, marking the beginning of its global presence. Today, Pony Club® is represented in 29 countries worldwide with a membership exceeding 110,000, making it the largest association of young riders globally.
The first recorded Pony Club® in Australia was formed in Ingleburn, New South Wales in 1939 by Mrs. Marjory Hirst and her family, who continue to be involved with horses. The Pony Club Association of NSW was officially established in 1952, bringing together clubs from Boggabri, Coolah, Glen Innes, Inverell, Merriwa, Scone, Singleton, Tamworth, Walcha, and Sydney.

In 1944, the Mountain District Horse and Pony Club was established in Croydon, Victoria. This club was inspired by an article in the English magazine ‘Riding’, which highlighted the success of Pony Clubs in England and motivated Miss Margaret Douglas to initiate a similar club in Australia. The Victorian Pony Club Association was subsequently formed in 1954, with Mr. A.V. Pope and Miss Kay Irving playing key roles in its establishment and growth.

The 1950s were a period of significant development for equestrians in Australia. The Australian Horse Society was founded in 1950, followed by the establishment of the Equestrian Federation of Australia (now Equestrian Australia) in 1951. Many early Pony Clubs in Australia affiliated with the British Horse Society Pony Club (BHSPC), adopting their resources and guidelines. The push for national uniformity within the Pony Club® movement culminated in the formation of the Australian Pony Club Council in 1961. This milestone occurred during the second Inter Pacific Rally held in Melbourne, which facilitated representation from all states and aimed to standardise practices and foster development nationwide.

Pony Club China

Pony Club Australia® has developed a unique partnership with China Pony Club, fostering mutual benefits for riders in both countries.

This relationship offers Australian Pony Club® members, coaches, and team managers opportunities to travel to China for competitions, cultural exchanges, and riding school assessments and accreditation.

The CPC system has become the most popular foreign equestrian system in China, thanks to its alignment with the PCA coaching syllabus. There are currently over 1,200 individual members across more than 36 member clubs in China.

Visits to China are organised regularly each year and are announced in the PCA Newsletter and through emails to clubs. Click below to download the map of clubs in China:
