Working Together to Grow Participation at Pony Club

Last month, representatives from every state and territory came together in Melbourne for the PCA Play Well Participation Workshop.

It was a great opportunity to share ideas, reflect on what’s happening at club level, and focus on one important question: how do we help more young people discover Pony Club, enjoy being part of it, and stay involved as they grow?

Over two days, State Associations, club leaders and staff worked closely together, talking openly about what’s working well and where members sometimes face challenges. The focus was on real experiences — from first rallies and new friendships, to competition pathways, volunteering, and leadership opportunities.

These conversations were practical, honest and centred on everyday Pony Club life. They reinforced how important it is that Pony Club remains welcoming, relevant and enjoyable for riders, families, coaches, officials and volunteers.

Our Shared Participation Priorities

Through the workshop, all states and territories agreed on five key priorities to guide participation across Pony Club in the coming years. These reflect the collective input of the group and will shape future actions and initiatives.

  1. Member-Centred Pathways
Making it easier for members to find the pathway that suits them — socially, recreationally or competitively.
  2. Clear Training and Officiating Pathways
Supporting coaches and officials with consistent, accessible education and development.
  3. Consistent Experiences Nationwide
Working towards clearer, more consistent rules, structures and pathways across Australia.
  4. Stronger Volunteer Support
Better supporting and recognising volunteers so clubs remain strong and sustainable.
  5. Positive, Inclusive Club Culture
Building respectful, welcoming environments where everyone feels safe and valued.

Together, these priorities provide a shared direction for how we grow and support participation across the country.

Turning Ideas into Action

This work is an important step in making sure Pony Club continues to meet the needs of young riders and their families, now and into the future. It reflects the experience, ideas and commitment of people working at all levels of our organisation.

The next phase is about turning these priorities into practical actions, resources and programs that support clubs in real ways. This work will continue over the coming months, with ongoing input from states, territories and clubs.

Thank you to everyone who contributed so thoughtfully to the workshop. Your experience and honesty are what make this work meaningful.

We’re looking forward to building on this momentum and sharing more as these ideas take shape.
