Young Coach of the Year

Nikita Mawhirt has been the driving force behind the development of a successful coaching program for the WA State Tetrathlon Squad over the past four years.

Her innovative approach has combined in-person squad camps with weekly online training programs, allowing athletes to improve their performance independently. Under her leadership, the WA State Tetrathlon team achieved significant success at the 2021 and 2023 National Championships. Nikita’s expertise and dedication were recognized on a national level, leading to her appointment as the National Coach for the Australian Tetrathlon team, which competed in Ireland and the UK in 2024.

To overcome the geographical challenges of coaching athletes spread across the country, Nikita developed customized online training programs tailored to individual needs. Her programs focused on building technique, speed, and endurance, while encouraging team members to share their progress, fostering a sense of unity and accountability. Nikita’s ability to motivate athletes to work hard for themselves and their team has been a key factor in her success as a coach.

Nikita’s coaching qualifications are extensive, including NCAS accreditation in swimming and shooting, complemented by her own international competition experience in Modern Pentathlon. With a Sports Science degree focusing on high-performance athletes, she offers comprehensive coaching in all four tetrathlon disciplines, including technique, fitness, nutrition, flexibility, and sports psychology. Her holistic approach supports athletes both physically and mentally, preparing them to perform under pressure.

Her online coaching programs have been particularly effective in providing structured, incremental improvement for riders, regardless of their starting level or geographical location. In addition, her in-person clinics are highly engaging, with fun games, team challenges, and drills that push athletes to their limits while encouraging a strong team spirit. The feedback from riders and parents alike has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants eager for the next session.

On the 2024 International Tetrathlon exchange, Nikita skillfully managed the team’s performance across three demanding competitions in different countries. She ensured the team understood each competition’s rules and helped them perform at their best, while also focusing on their physical, nutritional, and mental well-being. Nikita’s balance of performance, fun, and safety left the team with memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Despite her own busy career and personal life, Nikita has shown an exceptional commitment to volunteering and coaching, playing a vital role in the development of Tetrathlon at all levels within Pony Club. Her dedication, expertise, and ability to inspire athletes make her a standout coach.
