Volunteer of the Year

Debbie Ruff has been a dedicated supporter of Maryborough and District Horse and Pony Club (MDHPC) for 25 years. Just two years after joining, Debbie became a committee member and swiftly took on the role of club secretary. Over the past two decades, she has served as either club secretary or treasurer, consistently playing a vital role in the club’s executive team.

Debbie’s involvement in Pony Club began through her husband’s niece, whose love of horses inspired Debbie to join MDHPC. When her niece, now 32, was just six years old and wanted a pony, Debbie stepped in, bought her one, and joined her at Pony Club. Since then, she has supported three other nieces at Pony Club and now her great-nephew has also become a member.

Known for her kindness, fairness, and commitment, Debbie attends all club rallies, greeting riders, welcoming new members, assisting with gear checks, and diligently keeping membership records up to date. She has taken on numerous projects at the club, often spending afternoons or evenings, accompanied by her little dog, working on tasks such as painting the clubhouse, building a “poo pit,” repairing cross-country jumps, and maintaining the dressage area. Debbie refers to this time as her “therapy,” but it’s clear to all that her dedication stems from her deep love for the club.

As a committed member of the MDHPC executive team, Debbie ensures good governance at the club. She keeps accurate minutes, swiftly reports any incidents or rider falls, and makes sure all members are informed of Pony Club Victoria and Pony Club Australia’s policies. Recently, Debbie undertook the complex task of updating the club’s constitution and submitting it to Consumer Affairs.

Despite her husband’s declining health due to a terminal hereditary condition, Debbie’s unwavering commitment to MDHPC remains steadfast. Her professionalism and dedication have earned her the respect of all members, and the club is incredibly grateful for the countless hours she invests each year.
